What does a run to the UEFA Champions League final do to your bottom line? For Germany’s Borussia Dortmund, it meant a boost in revenues and profits to $408 million and $71 million, respectively.
That’s an increase of $90 million in revenues from the 2011-12 season when Dortmund won the domestic league and cup double.
Borussia Dortmund led all clubs in the world with an average attendance of 80,520 at Signal Iduna Park, the old Westfalenstadion, in 2012-13.
What makes BVB’s success so remarkable is that only a decade ago it was on the brink of bankruptcy and as recently as the 2006-07 season it faced the prospect of relegation.

ORLANDO CITY TOPS CHARTS. Orlando City, which is pushing hard for an MLS expansion franchise as soon as 2015, led USL PRO in attendance for the third year in a row. It averaged 8,053 fans for 14 regular-season matches, outdistancing the Rochester Rhinos, who averaged 5,795 fans. Orlando City is up significantly from its averages of 5,418 fans a game in 2011 and 6,610 in 2012. There is a huge disparity between the top and bottom of USL PRO. Four teams were regularly drawing less than 1,000 fans a game in 2013: Charlotte, Dayton, Los Angeles and VSI Tampa Bay FC.
WEDNESDAY TELEVISION NUMBERS. Chelsea beat out London rival Arsenal 3-1 in the battle for U.S. viewers of their Wednesday matches. The Chelsea-Aston Villa EPL match on NBCSN drew an average of 185,000 viewers, while the Fenerbahce-Arsenal match on the new Fox Sports 1 averaged 57,000 viewers.
STAT OF THE DAY. How badly indebted are Spanish clubs? As of June 2012, the 20 La Liga clubs owed 3.338 billion euros — almost $4.5 billion.
