According to outlets in Brazil the deal that should see Gilberto make the move from Internacional to Toronto FC will cost the MLS club just over $3 million in transfer fees. A reasonable seeming number for a player who spent the last two seasons on loan and is just starting to score consistently.
With Gilberto being shown around the town by the leaders of Toronto FC and MLSE on Tuesday night it seemed then that he was on the verge of signing for the MLS club. He was reported to have undergone a medical on Wednesday with the club and the signing should be made official on Thursday afternoon when the team is scheduled to hold a press conference.
With this being MLS the one piece of information that will not come out at that press conference is how much the club had to pay to secure their target. That does not stop outlets in Brazil from publishing numbers that can at least provide us with an idea of what the deal is worth.
According to Correio do Povo, the deal in place to bring Gilberto to MLS from Internacional will cost the club “R$ 7 milhões”.
When you convert that number from Brazilian Real to Canadian Dollars it works out to just over $3.18 million. The report also points out that Internacional need to make a number of sales like this just to balance their books for the year.
Getting over $3 million for a player who has spent the past two seasons out on loan and arrived at the club for far less in the first place seems like a good piece for of business for the Brazilian club. They are getting the funds that they need without having to give up another piece of their first team.
Internacional did not have the best year in 2013 spending much of the campaign closer to the relegation zone than they would have liked and now they are set to sell not only Gilberto but also Leandro Damião, another 24-year-old forward, who has drawn the interest of some of Europe’s top clubs.
South American outlets are also reporting that a portion of the transfer fee for Gilberto is destined for the club that developed the player and signed him to his first professional contract, Santa Cruz. According to a report on Yahoo! Brazil the lower division club will get 350,000 Brazilian Real (roughly $160,000 Canadian) as part of the deal.
With Gilberto all but confirmed at TFC the attention will quickly turn to who will be joining him at the club. It seems the club are closing in on a deal for Tottenham forward Jermain Defoe to fill their final Designated Player slot. If that is the goal at some point negotiations with other targets would have to stop and yesterday it was reported by some that a potential deal between TFC and Alberto Gilardino was no longer going to take place.
